Home Birth Midwifery Services
I have recently become a Licensed Direct Entry Midwife (LDEM), providing prenatal, home birth, newborn, and post partum services in Maryland. I remain a Licensed Midwife (LM) in the Commonwealth of Virginia. With the addition of the Maryland license I am now accepting private health insurance reimbursement as an out-of-network care provider in both states!
Ideally, giving birth is a joyful, deeply personal experience that leaves you in awe of your own strength and in love with your baby.
As a CPM providing home birth services, I offer holistic midwifery care as your primary professional health care provider during pregnancy, labor, birth and the 6-week post partum period, that is inclusive of The Midwives Model of Care; a fundamentally different approach to pregnancy and childbirth than contemporary obstetrics. The Midwives Model of Care™ is based on the fact that pregnancy and birth are normal life events. Midwifery care is uniquely nurturing, hands-on, comprehensive prenatal, newborn, and post partum care and education.
Recently, I have added preconception counseling and Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) services.
Your care is holistic, patient driven, evidence based, life style and culturally specific, compassionate care. Together, you and I will carefully monitor the progress of your pregnancy, labor, birth, and 6-week post partum period, and care of your newborn; secure in the knowledge that I am assessing to recommend appropriate management if complications arise. I work with you to promote a healthy pregnancy, provide education to help you make informed decisions about your and your baby’s care, base my recommendations on evidenced-based practice and parental informed choice, and view your acceptance of responsibility for your birth choices as vital to the success of the birth of your baby.
What to Expect During Your Midwifery Experience
I will see you once every four weeks through your first seven months, then every two weeks starting at 32 weeks until 40 weeks, after which visits are once a week. This schedule may be modified as appropriate. Your prenatal care can be customized to meet your preferences, lifestyle and cultural beliefs. At each visit I will physically examine you and your baby and address any questions you have about the pregnancy and birth at that time. Each visit averages 45 minutes or longer, as needed; I am willing to answer your questions and get to know you and your family. I am available to talk with you by telephone at any time.
Depending on your geographic location, many of these visits can take place on a weekday in the comfort of your home.
At 36 weeks I will visit your home for a prenatal visit (which takes about 90 minutes), check your birth supplies, review your birth preferences and emergency care plan, deliver a birthing tub, and get to know your birth team and home. This is a great visit to invite your entire birth team so they can have their questions answered!
I offer a personalized, holistic care during labor and birthing in the comfort of your home, with the assistance of a trained birth assistant. In the safety and privacy of your home, and following your preferences, The Midwives Model of Care™, and my practice guidelines, I will provide care during your labor and the birth of your baby. I am there to provide my skills, knowledge and expertise to ensure that your labor and birth are within the parameters of normal, and if not, to provide seamless transfer to a nearby hospital if complications develop. I am a proponent of “Gentle Birth” philosophy and will support your baby being born in water and “received” (I do not use the words “deliver” or “catch”) with assistance from you, your partner or friend/family member. I will provide immediate post partum care to you and newborn care (including a thorough newborn exam) and remain for several hours to check on you and your baby.
I will make two visits to your home during the first week following the birth (days #1 or #2, #5 or #7). During these visits I will examine you and the baby and answer any questions you and your family might have. Once a week for the next 2 weeks and then at 6 weeks I will speak with you and I am available for a 6-week post partum visit at your home, for an additional charge. If you would like a postpartum visit at 6 weeks that can be arranged at an extra fee.
Additional services that I can provide include custom-made herbal sitz baths for postpartum perineal recuperation, and placenta encapsulation, as well as a list of providers supplemental services, such as chiropractic care, acupuncture, therapeutic massage and doula services that may be helpful to you and your partner, addressing your prenatal and postpartum needs and those of your new baby.
What is a CPM?
A Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) is a knowledgeable, skilled and professional independent midwifery practitioner who has met the standards for certification set by the North American Registry of Midwives. The CPM is the only midwifery credential that requires knowledge about and experience in out-of-hospital settings. I am a home birth midwife who practices according to the Midwives Model of Care and is trained to assist healthy pregnant women who choose to give birth outside the hospital. I am not practicing as a nurse, nurse-midwife, or physician nor do I have hospital privileges, an affiliation with a hospital, nor a collaboration agreement with a physician.
