Claudia Booker is credential as a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) and is committed to providing comprehensive birth services, following the Midwifery Model of Care, for the broad spectrum of families across the Washington DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia area. She is a midwife open to attending your birth in any setting and tailors her scope of practice, chosen birth setting and your needs to guide you in achieving your desired birth. She has recently added preconception counseling for intrauterine insemination (IUI) clients to her list of birth related services, which allows an individual to receive holistic midwifery care from preconception through pregnancy, birth, and post partum.
As a CPM who also serves pregnant individuals giving birth in a hospital setting, she is one of an exclusive cadre of midwives, skilled health care professionals, who bring their midwifery skills and training to the doula role, assisting women to have the safe and joyous birth they planned and prepared for, within the parameters of sound medical practices.
Born and raised in Washington, DC, Claudia is the second generation of Bookers to care for the children and families in the Washington metro area. As a multifaceted birth practitioner, she has supported over 900 expectant families on their journey through birth to parenthood.
While immersing herself in birth work as a certified doula (DONA AND ICTC), childbirth educator (CAPPA), and breastfeeding counselor (LLLI) and midwife’s assistant for the better part of a decade, Claudia earned her NARM certification as a Certified Professional Midwife in 2011 and is licensed in the states of Maryland and Virginia, the only states in the area in which licensure for CPM’s is currently available. Her didactic and clinical skills trainings have included study at two schools of midwifery as well as The Farm Midwifery School with Ina Mae Gaskin. She has also completed a host of other specialized workshops and trainings while apprenticing with numerous midwives throughout the United States and abroad.
Her vast knowledge base is anchored by years of extensive hands-on training and apprenticeships with local, national and internationally recognized midwives.
Through mastery of a broader range of skills and advance practice expertise she can provide support in the areas of:

Eager to expand her experiential learning and share her skills, Claudia has sought out additional midwifery opportunities overseas. Serving as a midwifery student in Senegal, at the Kafountine Maternity Clinic, and later after earning her CPM she continued to serve in Bali, Indonesia as a volunteer advanced practice midwife at the Bumi Sehat Clinic with CNN Hero Ibu Robin Lim, CPM as her preceptors. Later in response to the call for midwives to assist communities devastated by Typhoon Yolanda, Claudia also volunteered as an advance practice midwife at a Birth Camp founded by Mercy In Action in Dulag, Lyete, Phillipines.
This time spent cultivating advanced midwifery practice skills in other countries has inspired her to focus more attention on global and maternal health. Recently she has achieved master trainer level certifications in several health specialties affecting women and children worldwide, including Jhpiego’s Helping Mothers Survive: Bleeding After Birth, the American Association of Pediatrics’ Helping Babies Breathe and Essential Care for Every Baby, and as completed additional clinical coursework in the performance of pre-screenings assessments for the early detection of cervical cancer.
Claudia is an adjunct faculty member at Mercy in Action Midwifery College and a guest lecturer at Bastyr University, American University and the Universities of Shady Grove. For eight years she has been a committed member of the DC Infant Mortality Review Committee and served as a key advisor for the Committee’s Stronger Together campaign, an initiative aimed at reducing infant mortality and premature birth. She has been featured in national and international periodicals as well as presented on various birth related topics via digital media.
